Why Horses?

Youth in crisis “tune out” therapists and other adults in their lives who are trying to help them because they associate adults with the hurts and wrongs they have experienced in their past.  Our goal at Building Dreams Ranch is to provide an environment in which children learn to trust again along with other necessary life skills.

Research shows that interaction with horses provides children a myriad of benefits are available almost immediately.  Horses are capable of unconditional love and forgiveness.  Also, because of their connectedness to the human spirit, they are able to reveal the emotions a person is trying to hide.  It is easier to begin building other life skills once a child’s guard is down and that child has begun dealing with emotions that he or she would much rather keep buried deep inside.

 The Benefits

As children work through and get past their immediate fear of trust and build a bond with their equine partner, room for them to develop other skills emerges.

Youth in crisis learn to trust, learn to be patient, and gain self-confidence when working with horses.  Research has shown that working towards a goal helps a child focus and develop communication and problem solving skills.  Communicating with a horse teaches a child how to be assertive and not aggressive and shows how compassion, not anger, will help each child be a friend to his or her self and others.  Building Dreams Ranch provides the outlet for this and so much more.  Youth in crisis need a place where they feel understood and not ostracized and a place of hope where they can heal.
